Running can be a super cheap hobby. You just strap on a pair of old trainers and walk out the door for a jog. However, like any hobby, it can range into incredibly expensive!

Clothing

The less cotton the better when it comes to running clothes. I tend to run in a light synthetic T-shirt, and some lululemon shorts I've had forever. They might be expensive but they last well at least. If it's cooler then a long sleeve merino top is handy.

Shoes

Running shoes are pretty person-specific, bear in mind that what works for some people might not work for you, even if it's a very popular shoe. When you're running multiple back-to-back days in a row it can be a good idea to rotate through different shoes. Some people say it helps the shoe last longer and some people think it reduces injury risk. I've recently introduced a maximum cushioned shoe for super easy runs and it's been great. But by the time you have a trail shoe, a tempo shoe and a maximum cushioned shoe it really adds up.

Watch

I've used a Coros Apex 42mm for the past 2 years. It's been great and held up really well. The battery life started off absolutely amazing, but has gotten slightly worse over the years. A running watch is good for trail running, and handy for keeping a rough track of heart rate to ensure you're running nice and easy.

Others

There's a lot of other useful running gear. For example calf sleeves, running hats and running sunglasses. Be sure to use sun block and be safe in the sun.
