I've been running over the last four years, with each year culminating in a half marathon, a marathon or an ultramarathon (in one disastrous year I did both within two weeks, neither went well for me). Here are a couple of the websites and resources I've used to increase my distance, and that I will be using to increase my speed over the coming year. See my follow-up gear post for more info on kit I've been trying out or gear I regularly run in.

Strava

Strava is a great tool for keeping track of your pace and distance over time. You can use it by itself to track your runs as you do them or use pretty much any GPS watch to upload to Strava. There are some extra features that are subscriber-only, but the free tier is very useful for any runner.

YouTube

There's a lot of great YouTube channels or individual videos, some range from deeply informative to just pure inspiration or entertainment.

The video above focusses on the importance of running EASY. It's a common refrain that your easy days should be very easy, and most of your days should be easy! For example if you're running 4 days a week 3 of those should be easy, with only one being a hard running day.

Run with Hal

If you're looking for a solid training program to get started or to be ready for the next event, check out Hal Higdon's site. The site has lots of training programs, but even better is the app, which customises workouts for your goals and pace, with tonnes of options for your training goals. Again, there's a subscriber option but the free tier is still incredibly useful. It does seem like a lot of the program on the app really aim to create a lot of fatigue right off the bat, so they can be incredibly challenging at the start before settling down.
